Laboratory Assistant: Ref No. LA-5

Report to: Report Health Facility Lab Coordinator as Day to day Supervisor and Laboratory Technical Officer- LPHSK anecca as Technical Supervisor.
Job Role: Role definition: To carry out laboratory investigations to diagnose the different diseases to support treatment, monitor disease prognosis among clients and assist prevention efforts according to the anecca-Uganda laboratory SOPs & MOH guidelines
Key Result Areas:
1. Conduct laboratory tests and investigations as per the laboratory specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)/protocols and results dispatched timely to clinicians
2. Perform routine QA/QC of tests, including Internal and External Quality Control Checks for all test methods in line with the laboratory SOP and MoH guidelines
3. Review and implement laboratory Safety measures to maintain a healthy and safe working environment routinely in line with the Laboratory Safety SOP/MoH Safety guidelines and internationally acceptable safety standards(ISO 1590:2020 & 35001)
4. Perform specimen collection for clients, transportation, referral and also reception of referred specimens, with proper verification and documentation/accessioning of these specimens in the MoH registers/tools in line with the laboratory S.O.P.
5. Conduct periodic maintenance for laboratory equipment as per their service schedules/SOP, including routine monitoring of the equipment & environmental conditions in line with the laboratory SOP to minimize service interruptions
6. Conduct related laboratory activities including proper documentation, sample processing, preparation of reagents as required etc. in line with the laboratory S.O.P and MoH guidelines
Identify and submit periodic forecasts of laboratory reagents and supplies and request for the required inventory from the stores/or MoH timely including proper accountability for the supplies in line with the Laboratory supply chain management SOP and the health facility store procedures to minimize service interruptions
7. Implement best practices of maintaining a robust Quality Management Systems (QMS) based on ISO 15189: 2012 standards including mentorships and other related activities required
8. Maintain an inventory of laboratory equipment and reagents routinely in line with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures
9. Compile, prepare and submit weekly, monthly periodic laboratory activity reports to the supervisors as may be required and carry out other duties as assigned
Required Education Training, Experience, other relevant skills& personality attributes
• A certificate or Diploma in Medical laboratory technology from a recognized institution
• Must be registered with the Allied Health Professional Council (AHPC/MoH) and with a valid current annual practicing license/Extracts
• Training in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)/experience in Laboratory Quality management systems (LQMS)/and or laboratory continuous quality improvement is an added advantage
• Ability to run or proficiency in using automated laboratory equipment.
• A minimum of 1 year of experience implementing laboratory works with a reputable organization. Working with USAID related funded programs/organizations is an added advantage
• A team player with excellent communication skills (both oral and written), Focused and observant, analytical skills, networking and communication skills, documentation and reporting, presentation and training skills, office organizational skills
• Ability to multitask and work under minimal supervision and produce expected outputs
• Experience working in a multi-cultural environment & remote area such as Karamoja
